History of GSC

1957: The Greensboro Junior Chamber of Commerce, also known as the Greensboro Jaycees, initiated the idea of establishing a science museum in Greensboro. Their vision was to create a place where the community could engage with science and technology in an interactive and educational way.

1958: The Greensboro Junior Museum, the precursor to the Greensboro Science Center, officially opened its doors in 1958. It was initially located in Lindley Park.

1962: The museum moved to a new facility on Summit Avenue, where it continued to expand its exhibits and educational programs.

2000: The institution underwent a significant transformation and rebranding. The Greensboro Science Center emerged as a result of the merger between the Natural Science Center of Greensboro and the Greensboro Children’s Museum.

2008: Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 2008, the facility enables visitors to take advantage of the AZA’s reciprocity program. This program allows individuals with a membership from another AZA organization to receive admission discounts at the Greensboro Science Center.

2013: A major expansion project was undertaken, which included the construction of the Carolina SciQuarium, an aquarium showcasing aquatic life from around the world.

2015: On May 2, 2015, the Greensboro Science Center opened its tree-top adventure park, Skywild.

2019: The Greensboro Science Center welcomed the public to Revolution Ridge, its latest expansion, on June 4, 2021. This marks the largest addition in the history of the Center.
